[ Autographs ] JOHN W. CRAWFORD (1847 - 1917) "Captain Jack", American scout who served Marritt and Crook, and Chief of Scouts for the Black Hills Rangers. Later in life he became the author of over 100 short stories. A great Crawford item, his book The Poet Scout, Henry Keller & Co., San Francisco, 1879, first edition with an inscribed poem on the front flyleaf: "Esteem and love be ever thine, And never care nor strife. Prosperity with love combine, And happinessthrough life. With best wishes of the Author J. W. Crawford `Capt. Jack'". Slight wear to the covers with a few blemishes to back cover, contents are very good.
