[ Autographs ] John S. Mosby 1833-1916 Confederate officer, "The Grey Ghost" led his Partisan Rangers on numerous troublesome raids against Union forces and supply trains. Superb content T.L.S. 1p. 4to on Justice Department letterhead, Washington, Apr. 18, 1906 to Charles Bruce in Boston. Mosby accepts an invitation to a dinner, adding a proviso: "...I shall not be expected to do any speechmaking. I have neither taste, nor talent, for that sort of thing..." he concludes with a statement that forty years earlier would have had him shot: " '..No man cherishes General Grant's memory with more affection than I do, and it is always a pleasure to me to testify to the nobility of his character... ' A few small marginal stains, mounting remnants on verso, very slight blurring of typed text only. A Most remarkable association!
