[ Autographs ] JOHN F. KENNEDY Rare fine content typed D.S. "John Kennedy" as President on green White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, May 6. 1963 to Secretary of State Dean Rusk. Excellent Cold War content, reading in part: "...Pursuant to Section 103(b) of the Mutual Defense Assistance Control Act of 1951, and in accordance with the recommendation contained in your letter of May 4, 1963, concurred in by the Department of State, the Department of Defense...Ihereby direct the continuance of United States assistance to Belgium, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlandsand the United Kingdom. You are hereby directed to inform the Chairmenof the six Congressional Committees of this determination..." Fine condition. The Mutual Defense Assistance Control Act of 1951 was instituted by Harry Truman as a means of funding the defense forces ofNATO nations ravaged during World War II. As for Kennedy's input, he had faced Soviet threats during the Cuban Missile Crisis only six months earlier.
