The front page story covers John Dillinger's famous escape from an Indiana jail using a wooden pistol to threaten the guard! The headlines read: "Dillinger Makes Sensational Jail Break... Locks Guard In Cell and Steals Sheriff's Car To Make Getaway ....Desperado Speeds Away with Negro Murderer and Hostage To Tune Of 'Last Round Up' and Eludes Scores Of Officers In Manhunt" The story describes Dillinger's use of the gun and describes the escape, giving many direct quotes the criminal usedas he broke out. Lots more crime on the front page, including a wealthy Chicagoan killed by gangsters, the shooting of Ford Bradshaw after his murderous drunken spree in a roadhouse, and a life penalty given in a murder case. Ah, the good old days! some toning, otherwisevery good.
