[ Autographs ] JOHN C. CALHOUN (1782 - 1850) Vice President of the United States and an ardent supporter of slavery and the Southern cause in Senate debates. A.L.S. "J. C. Calhoun" 1p. 4to., Washington, June14, 1834, to N[icholas] Biddle, Esq. In part: "...I take the liberty of introducing you to our Alexander of North Carolina...the Speaker of the House of Representatives of that state who ranks among her most respectable citizens...". Prominent folds and four marginal tears to the bottom, two lightly affecting the initials in Calhoun's signature, else just good.
