[ Autographs ] JEFFREY AMHERST (1717 - 1797) British major general who captured Louisbourg from the French in 1758, served as Governor General of British North America but left the office due to Pontiac'sRebellion, later served as colonial Governor of Virginia. Good content A.L.S. "Jeff: Amherst" as Governor General of North America, 1p. 4to. New York, Aug. 13, 1762 to Governor Monkton of New York concerning the problems of procuring seamen: "I have tried all methods to force the masters of the Transports to complete their Seamen, they offer extravagant Wages, but all will not do, and I find I shall want sixteen men for that Service. I am therefore necessitated to give you this trouble, as I imagine sixteen men may be very easily taken from the Stews [drunks] of the Town, that it will be an advantage to this Place to be rid of them, and the Constables shall be allowed 20 shillings per man. if you think proper to direct the Mayor to take up that number..."
