[ Autographs ] JEAN LANNES (1769 - 1809) Duc de Montebello, French marshal and son of a stable boy who fought with great distinction under Napoleon in the Egyptian and Italian campaigns, victorious at Montebello and Austerlitz, mortally wounded at Essling. Exceedingly rare war-date D.S. "G[enera]l de Brigade Lannes" with several additional holograph words, 1p. oblong 8vo., Cairo, June 26, 1799. While serving with the Army of Egypt, Lannes submitted this document to the National Treasury certifying receipt of pay for a fellow general. In part: "...Accountable receipt in the amount of 1,000 livres...I the undersigned acknowledge receipt...directly from CitizenEsteve, Chief Paymaster of the army...as expense item described in themargin, for which this is the receipt..." Light toning, light soilingat margins, otherwise good..
