[ Autographs ] James R. Chalmers 1831-1898 Confederate brigadier general who led a brigade at Shiloh and later led cavalry forces with Forrest at Fort Pillow and in the Franklin and Nashville campaigns. Rare war date A.D.S. with initials " J.R.C. ", eleven lines on the verso of Special Order No. 41 issued by Braxton Bragg at Tupelo, June 12, 1862 Bragg has arranged an inspection of cavalry forces by the Acting Inspector General and a medical inspector to: '...report in detail upon the condition of the men and horses - All inefficient men will be designated for discharge...'On the verso, Chalmers writes: "I pass orders to the regiment to prepare for the above and to make out their muster rolls & to have all horses & men present. This inspection will commence Monday Morning with Adams and Semmes[?]. J. R. C."
