[ Autographs ] (JAMES I) (1566 - 1625) King of England, and as James VI was King of Scotland, son of Mary, Queen of Scots and succeeded tothe throne following the death of Elizabeth I, sought to assert the divine right of kings, and his severity toward Roman Catholics broughtabout the Gunpowder Plot. The King James version of the Bible was prepared in his honor (1611). A manuscript document (unsigned) from his reign, 1p. oblong 8vo., on vellum, 1623, an indenture with Ralph Tirrie concerning a yeoman's payment of a bond. Signed with marks by four witnesses and Tirrie at bottom. Some stains in the body, seal lacking and vellum cut at lower-right, generally good.
