[ Autographs ] JAMES GRANT (1720 - 1806) British major general duringAmerican Revolution who succeeded Cornwallis as commander of the British outposts in New Jersey at the end of 1776, and commanded brigades at Brandywine and Germantown. Manuscript D.S. 1p. oblong 12mo, Burlington, N.J., Dec. 11, 1776, penned only a weeks before Washington's surprise attack on Hessian troops just to the north at Trenton, a loyalist oath in which Grant certifies "...that the Bearer Saml. Updike Brick Layer of Burlington has taken the oath agreeable tothe proclamation of the 30th. Nov. 1776..." Slightly frayed at edges,otherwise very good.
