[ Autographs ] JACOB JENNINGS BROWN (1775 - 1828) Major General in the War of 1812, defended American base at Sackett's, led at the battle of Niagara and the defense of Fort Erie. A.L.S., "Jac. Brown" 2pp. tall 4to., Portsmouth, Sept. 2, 1818, to Col. Charles R. Gardner asking him for copies of a toast he had given in Portland. In part: "..The object of this is to correct a mistake that the editor of the Portland Gazette has made in his paper of yesterday in publishing a toast given by me at a public dinner with which I was honored in that Town. The toast I gave was in the words following: The State of Massachusetts First in the best and noblest cause, American Independence, May the Glory that enriched her in 83 never be tarnished may it never be forgotten. I desire you to furnish a copy of this toast to each of the printers of newspapers in the City of New York, so that if they publish the proceedings of the dinner my toast only begiven correctly. The editor of the Portland Gazette will correct the mistake...". Boldly written, with integral address leaf, a very slightseal tear on verso, otherwise very good.
