[ Autographs ] HERBERT C. HOOVER Extremely fine content T.L.S. marked"Personal" in his hand with two other autograph corrections, 2pp. 4to, [Stanford, Calif.], May 9, 1933 to Senator Simeon D. Fess. Less than two months after the inauguration of Franklin D. Roosevelt and inthe midst of the 100 days, Hoover harshly criticizes the policies of FD.R. and the Democrats. In part: "...It is a certainty that it [the Republican Party] cannot survive if it is to follow those who would compete in demagoguery and socialism with the Democratic party. That is now definitely their field. Nor can it survive if it is to follow those who attempt to compromise with them. It cannot survive if it is to be dominated by those representing the interest of greed. The partycan command a majority of the people as defender of constitutional methods; of local responsibility, not centralization; of real liberty not abated by the glitter of radical dictatorship; regulation and not regimentation of men; the representative of sound economic thought, honest currency, and honest private initiative; protection and upbuilding of our country before sloppy economic or political internationalism. All this sounds old fashioned just now, but it will sound new in a year. My own battle, as you know, has been constantly with the extremes of the Republican party as well as with the Democratic party - the disloyal demagogues of the West and the disloyal representatives of special interests mostly emanating from New York City - and I might add some whose political morality leads them to deal both ways. All this becomes vital to the future of the United States. When this present regime of imported nostrums fails - as it will one year, five years. or ten years hence - there will be two forces pressing - sheer socialism & Communism and a return to our own American system. Unless the Republican party can have cleaned its house and demonstrate its fidelity to these things, it is the end of this civilization. The great salaried group, the business men, the thinking workers and the farmers in the northern states, in fact, those who can think, will all of them return to the principles I have stated, --and two million more of them in the last election would havegiven a majority. They will not follow disloyalties or compromise..." With a copy of Senator Fess' response. Two file holes at top of each page, lightly toned dampstain toward upper right, well clear of text otherwise fine condition. One of the best Hoover letters we have ever seen!
