In part: "...I send herewith the proof of contents of Vol IV and the first part of appendix to Vol I... I cannot send youand part of the Index until I receive all the appendix. I also want copies of contents of Vols I & IV.." Fine. Halleck was called "Old Brains" because of the books he had written on military subjects and tactics.
