[ Autographs ] Henry W. Halleck 1815-1872 Union major general Lincoln's General in Chief and advisor, he was a major administrator in the prosecution of the war against the Confederates. War date A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo. on Headquarters of the Army letterhead, Washington, Nov.24, 1863 to David Van Nostrand, publisher, concerning proofs of a bookHalleck was writing at the time, probably his translation of Jomini'sLife of Napoleon. In part: "...I send herewith the proof of contents of Vol IV and the first part of appendix to Vol I... I cannot send youand part of the Index until I receive all the appendix. I also want copies of contents of Vols I & IV.." Fine. Halleck was called "Old Brains" because of the books he had written on military subjects and tactics.
