War date A.L.S. as brigadier general, 1p. 4to., Headquarters, lst Brigade, Somerville, Va., Sep. 18, 1861 to First Lieutenant Hoffman Atkinson. In part: "'..You are hereby appointed an aide de Camp on my Staff - and you will be obeyed and respected accordingly - and you are entitled to all the rights and privileges appertaining thereto together with rank and pay of Captain on the Staff,."
