[ Autographs ] HENRY DEARBORN (1751 - 1829) American military officerand Secretary of War, fought at Bunker Hill, in Arnold's Quebec expedition, at Wyoming Valley, and in the War of 1812, taking Fort George and York with heavy losses. Fine content war-date A.L.S. 3pp. 4to. With integral address leaf, "Head Quarters, Greenburgh", Aug. 22,1812 to Col. Decius Wadsworth, Comm. Gen. of Ordnance. In part: "...Ifthe Secretary of War could be induced to consent to your being locatedhere...it would enable you to put your Department in operation to muchbetter effect...one or more of your deputies might be employed in procuring such information [concerning cannon and ordnance stores] andforming such arrangements as circumstances require in the Southern & Western sections of the Union...it is absolutely necessary that you should have a Deputy at Philadelphia...I find it impossible to performthe duties...[of] the Ordnance Department while occupied with so many other arrangements..."
