Description:

[ Autographs ] GUY CARLETON (1724 - 1808) British General and Governor of Canada, served as Commander-in-Chief of British forces inAmerica toward the end of the American Revolution. Fine content L.S. 1p. small 4to., Quebec, April 17, 1775 in French to Monsieur De Lanaudiere of the Quebec Legislative Council. Two days before the outbreak of hostilities at Lexington and Concord, Carleton invites de Lanaudiere to see him being sworn in as Governor of Quebec in a ceremony at the Chateau St. Louis. Carleton, an Irish Protestant, actively supported the Quebec Act in Parliament in 1774 which granted religious toleration to Catholics in Canada. The act, which did much to further alienate American colonists from Parliament, did wonders for Carleton's popularity in Quebec where he was warmly greeted by the clergy upon his arrival in 1775. Fine condition.
