Lot 78
[ Autographs ] GUSTAV COOK (1835 - 1900) Colonel commanding Terry's Texas Rangers after late 1862, severely wounded several times while leading his men, most notably at Bentonville. An extremely rare war- dated A.D.S. 1p. 12mo., [n.d. n.p.], a pencil endorsement of a pass for one of his men. The pass, also in pencil, reads: "Permission is hereby granted G.C. MacMurphy, Lt. of Co, H 8th Texas Cavalry to go and get his horse on the Fayetteville Road and then report to the Regiment". The endorsement at bottom, completely in Cook's hand, reads "Approved, Gustav Cook, Lt. Col. Cmdg.". Somewhat light but entirely legible, although the document is uniformly heavily soiled. Cook is extremely rare in any form, and we are unaware of any previous examples of a war-date endorsement of his being sold.
