Description:

[ Autographs ] (Grant And Lee) Printed document, 8pp. 8vo., Confederate House of Representatives, Dec. 7, 1864, a Confederate imprint detailing a lengthy correspondence between Generals Grant andLee concerning providing relief to Union and Confederate prisoners. In order to bring about that result, the Confederate government had sent letters requesting action to the Union authorities. Upon becomingaware of this, Grant wrote directly to Lee, stating that he would "..not interpose any obstacle to any plan that may be proposed which gives equal privileges to both belligerents...' Lee responded positively, and an exchange of letters between Lee, Grant, and Ould, the Confederate exchange agent, followed to work out the details of such an arrangement. This exchange is quoted in its entirety in this pamphlet. Very good. Reference: Parrish & Wallingham 2293
