Description:

[ Autographs ] GEORGES-JACQUES DANTON (1759 - 1794) French revolutionary leader who assumed leadership of the revolutionaries following the fall of the monarchy and became the de facto head of government. Danton was gradually identified with the moderates and wasarrested by Robespierre and beheaded by the guillotine. Fine content DS., "Danton" as Minister of Justice, 1p. folio, Paris, August 27, 1792 in French ordering commissioners to obtain armaments. In part: ".... The National Assembly decrees that two commissioners, its members, proceed to Rochefort take charge and send to Paris the cannons that will appeal to them as at this time not being necessary for the town, and guns and other instruments of war that will be found in the various arsenals of the said city...". On August 10, just a week before our decree, a Paris mob stormed the Royal Palace, killing the guards and forcing the disempowered King Louis XVI to take refuge withthe Assembly. Our document likely refers to the monarchy's new need for arms against the Revolutionaries. Indeed, Louis' troubles were just beginning, for on August 19, the Allies invaded France, capturingthe fortresses of Longwy and Verdun, and advanced steadily toward Paris. Less than six months later, Louis was beheaded on January 21, 1793, and Danton assumed leadership. Boldly signed, with a red handstamp in the lower left corner that ironically bears the inscription "Louis XVI by the Grace of God and by the Grace of the Constitutional Law King of the French." Light wear to right margin, otherwise very good. An important document, and unusually attractive.E1,500-2,000
