Description:

[ Autographs ] GEORGE WASHINGTON (1732 - 1799) First President of theUnited States and commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Partly printed D.S. "Go:Washington" as President, 1p. vellum, folio, Philadelphia, May 20, 1796 granting Captain CharlesGallahue of the Virginia Line of the Continental Army 600 acres in southeast Ohio. Also signed by TIMOTHY PICKERING as Secretary of State and with a short autograph endorsement on the verso by Secretary of War JAMES MCHENRY who explains that "Charles Gallahue was originally intitled [sic.] to the Bounty land within mentioned as granted to the within named Nathaniel Massie who claims under the said Charles Gallahue...May 6, 1796" Captain Gallahue, like many others who lacked the means to move to the frontier, immediately sold off the title to speculators. Ironically, George Washington purchased much land in the Ohio Valley in this manner. Moderate soiling with a light dampstain atcenter, usual folds, text somewhat light in places, otherwise in very good condition.
