[ Autographs ] FRENCH INTELLIGENCE REPORT Fine manuscript intelligence report, 3pp. small 4to., [n.p.], January, 1778 in French Likely written as a reference copy for a French intelligence official it reiterates a resolution of the Continental Congress dated Dec. 30,1776 instructing "...That Commissioners be sent to the Courts of Vienna, France, Prussia, and the Grand Duke of Tuscany..." The resolution includes specific diplomatic goals including: "...that the respective Commissioners do everything which is in their power to persuade the Emperor of Germany, Their Very Christian Majesties, Catholic and Prussian, to oppose new troops, Russian, German and others, being employed in waging war against the United States...That they will persuade, if it is possible, H.V.C.M. [Louis XVI] to assist the United States in their present war with Great Britain, by attacking the Electorate of Hanover or such other part of the British dominion be it in Europe or in the two Indies..." The resolution also instructs the commissioners to offer incentives to France and Spain inorder to secure an alliance including offering to Spain "...the Port of Pensacola, on condition that the Citizens and Inhabitants of the United States shall enjoy without interruption free Navigation of the Mississippi..." Very good condition.
