[ Autographs ] FRANKLIN PIERCE (1804 - 1869) Fourteenth President of the United States who initiated the Gadsden Purchase, opening up the Northwest for settlement. Fine content A.L.S. "Frank: Pierce" as Senator, 2pp. 4to., with integral address leaf, Washington, Jan. 16, 1842 to H. H. Carroll in Concord, NH. In part: "...It affords me sincere pleasure...to learn that Col. Barton is nominated for the Rockingham District. Will there be any opposition to Norris in Pittsfield? Who was the competition for the nomination...How the resolutions of the various Conventions must annoy that man...Was the Convention packed by the `Young Men'?...I laughed most heartily I assure you over Tracy & Mormonism...Hill will be compelled to reply toyou...If he assails you I would notice it only as connection with higher objects - principles & the Democratic cause...things are looking decidedly well in New Hampshire...Prompt and vigourous exertions ought to be made by your friends in all the Conventions..." Fine condition. In 1842 Mormon leader Joseph Smith was at the height of his power and was wooed by the highest powers of both political parties. The same year, Pierce left the Senate and undertook the management of most of the New Hampshire campaigns.
