[ Autographs ] FRANCIS FESSENDEN (1839 - 1906) Union brigadier general who fought under Buell at Shiloh and lost a leg in the Red River campaign. A.L.S. "Francis Fessenden" 4pp. 8vo., Portland, Jan. 29, 1846, to General H. H. Plaisted, regarding the death of Union Brigadier Charles H. Morgan, and asking for his support in obtaining apension for this widow. In part: "...On the 21th of last month Genl. Charles H. Morgan, Major of the 4th Artillery, died suddenly of apoplexy at Alcantrus Island near San Francisco in California.... Morgan was Chief of Staff of the Second Corps during the war and was one of the ablest and hardest working men in the Army...At the time ofhis death he was in charge of one of the most responsible posts in theCountry, having charge of some two hundred military prisoners...He planned some of the most valuable movements of the Second Corps and few men in his Army better comprehended the higher art of his profession...There is never a more deserving case than Morgan's, whichunites the features of great service and great need on the part of the family...".
