[ Autographs ] EMMANUEL GROUCHY (1766 - 1847) French general, a commander of cavalry who fought with distinction under Hoche, became the last marshal appointed by Napoleon but refused to march at Waterloo and commanded the remnants of the shattered army. Exiled to America by the Bourbons and blamed by Napoleon for his loss at Waterloo. Scarce A.L.S. "M. Cte de Grouchy" while in exile, 1p. 8vo., Brandywine, Apr. 24 [n.y.], in French asking his correspondent to handle some important financial transactions with a banker in St. Petersburg. Light offsetting from a portrait, otherwise very good.
