[ Autographs ] ELEANOR ROOSEVELT (1884 - 1962) First Lady, wife of Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States. Fine content T.L.S. on her personal letterhead, 1p. 8vo., New York, May 26,1961 responding to an accusation of Communist sympathy regarding her efforts to free Cuban exiles captured in the Bay of Pigs invasion. In part: "...None of us are making any efforts on behalf of Castro or Communism. We are simply meeting a challenge which Castro has laid down. I don't think meeting the challenge in this way makes us any weaker. In fact, I think it will make us stronger. Details are being properly worked out on the exchange..." After the failed invasion, Eleanor Roosevelt joined in a committee to negotiate the release of the prisoners held by Castro. The deal specifically called for an exchange for tractors, but after nine weeks, the negotiations fell apart due to the fact that Castro kept increasing his demands. The prisoners were eventually released a few years later. With original envelope. Fine.
