[ Autographs ] Edward Clark 1815-1880 Confederate Governor of Texas who assumed office when Sam Houston refused to swear allegiance to the Confederacy. After his defeat at the polls, Clark became a colonel leading forces under Kirby Smith. War date D.S. as Confederate Governor of Texas, 1p. 8in x 3in, Austin, July 2, 1861, a partly-printed State of Texas treasury warrant ordering that funds intended for "Protection of the Frontier' be paid to an attorney representing 60 soldiers for their services rendered. Signed by Clark on verso, and by comptroller Clement R. Johns. A penned "X" serves asa cancel on the recto of the bond and slightly show through on the verso, where Clark has signed, but does not affect his signature. Light soiling.
