[ Autographs ] EARLY MORMON MISSIONARY LETTER A good content A.L.S. 4pp. 4to., Belfast, Ireland, Jan. 16, 1856, in which James Ferguson, in charge of the Mormon Mission to Ireland, writes his wife Jane in Utah. In part: "...I am making preparations to throw off the Irish Mission. Bro. Scott will enter upon his duties as my successor on the 27th...I will then await the instructions of Prest. Richards...a word in private. Those Sutherlands are SCOUNDRELS... Show this to Brigham or Heber in confidence and ask them if it is not a fact. Get Hiram to do it...I cannot tell you how grateful I felt to Brother Brigham for including my name among the boys he sent for...Nothing is too severe for me to pass through with the help of God...I often think how much Iowe Brother Brigham, Heber and their associates...How often their goodcouncils are remembered by me now. What a kind father Brigham has beento me...On Sunday I held my General Conference and turned over the presidency to Bro. John Scott, my successor...The saints and a number of strangers were very sorrowful...". Ferguson would later become involved in the disturbances leading to the "Mormon Expedition" in 1857. Very good, with original transmittal envelope addressed to his wife in Great Salt Lake City, also very good.
