Description:

[ Autographs ] DOLLEY MADISON (1768 - 1849) First Lady and famed Washington hostess, wife of James Madison, fourth President of the United States. A.L.S. "D.P.M.", 1p. 12mo., [Washington, ca. 1830] to her nephew and deceased husband's namesake James Madison Cutts. In full: "Dear Madison - will you have the kindness to return to me the two small likenesses, executed in Paris. I wish to have them copied directly for the sake of him, who superintended the execution of them in France. They were under glass you know, and that was immovable - and the likeness when taken from [Gilbert] Stuart's, remarkably good. Love to Ellen - Yours DPM". The First Lady here refers to miniature portraits which James Madison had made in France from the original, larger portraits of Madison and Jefferson that artist Gilbert Stuart painted in 1805. Expertly inlaid, near fine condition.
