[ Autographs ] David D. Porter 1813-1891 Union admiral who received the surrenders of Forts Jackson and St. Philip, and was indispensable in the siege and subsequent Union victory at Vicksburg. Fine content war-date L.S. 1p. 4to. on "North Atlantic Squadron, U.S. Flag-Ship Malvern" letterhead, City Point, Apr. 10, 1865 to the commander of theU.S.S. Monticello. Just days after Lee's surrender and with chaos theorder of the day in Southern ports, Porter issues urgent orders. In part: "...Cruise between Cape Charles and Willoughby... Permit no vessel or steamer to go out unless strictly examined... Efforts are being made on the part of rebels to capture, pillage and destroy everything they can, and they may attempt to get to sea...' Fine.
