[ Autographs ] David Bell Birney 1825-1864 Union major general who replaced Phil Kearny, he fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. In October, 1864 Birney succumbed to malaria, dying at his home. Scarce, lengthy war- date A.E.S. removed from a document [n.p.], May 29, 1863 In part: "...I cheerfully concur with Col. Hayman's recommendation & hope that Major De Lacy will be given [the]chance [and] authority to reorganize the regiment...' Signed adding rank "Maj. Gent. Comg. Corps"
