Description:

[ Autographs ] (Confederate Generals) A fantastic assembly of war date endorsements of rare and important Confederate generals, all on the same document. The document, 2pp. sm. folio, Richmond, 1864, is on a partly-printed Confederate Conscript Office letterhead and instructs that D. H. Campbell be arrested for deserting from the 31stVirginia Infantry. At the top, Walter H. Taylor (b. 1838), Lee's chief staff officer, writes and signs a ten line signed endorsement instructing that the deserter should be returned to the 19th VirginiaCavalry. On the verso are more endorsements, and appear in the following order: John Pegram 1832-1865, a brigadier general who led cavalry at Murfreesboro and under Forrest, killed at Hatcher's Run atthe war's end. Pegram signs a forwarding endorsement adding rank as brigadier general. Beneath is a second signed endorsement by Pegram, again forwarding the document. There follows an autograph endorsement signed by Richard S. Ewell 1817-1872 , lieutenant general who fought under Jackson, and later fought at Gettysburg and Spotsylvania, finally captured at Sayier's Creek. Ewell's endorsement, Feb. 11, 1864, follows those of Pegram by two days, and further forwards the document, adding his rank as lieutenant general. There is also an endorsement signed by John Smith Preston 1816-1887 who led brigades at Corinth, Vicksburg and Chickamauga. Again, this is a forwarding endorsement and has faded substantially with the signature remaining legible. Finally, there are five more endorsements, two by William H. Crank, with others by John A. Carpenter, J. C. Shields, and a Colonel J. S. Hoffman. A fine assemblage of generals, in very good condition.
