[ Autographs ] CHESTER A. ARTHUR (1829 - 1886) Twenty-first Presidentof the United States who took office following the assassination of James Garfield. Exceedingly rare signed book Tom Brown at Oxford, Part Two, Ticknor and Fields, Boston, 1861, boldly signed on the frontflyleaf: "C. A. Arthur July 30, 1861". Beneath Arthur's signature appear two signatures of his son, CHESTER A. ARTHUR, JR. (1864-1937) who signs in pencil twice, once as a child, and he again places a fullpencil signature on the front flyleaf. Spine backing torn, corners andbottom of spine worn, generally good condition. Arthur is very rare in signed books.
