[ Autographs ] CHARLES GRAVIER VERGENNES (1719 - 1787) French foreignminister who supplied secret aid to Washington's army and supported open alliance with the United States in 1778. A remarkable A.L.S. in French, 2pp. 4to., Versailles, Jan. 26, 1783, in which Vergennes writes a Marshall of France about the impending finalizing of a Treatyof Peace between France, Britain, and the newly created United States!In part: "...I rejoice with you, my dear Marshall, on the dawn of the reestablishment of Peace...The word peace affects all sensitive hearts but on this occasion it must effect those hearts which are truly French. The peace for which the preliminaries are signed will be, I hope, an enduring monument to the moderation and to the integrity of the King...". With complete transcription, very good.
