Description:

[ Autographs ] CHARLES COTEWORTH PINKNEY (1746 - 1825) American statesman and military officer, an aide de camp to Washington who also defended Fort Sullivan and commanded Fort Moutrie where he was captured when Charleston fell. Pinkney was also signer of the Constitution and authored the religious test clause. A.L.S. 2pp. 4to.,Pinkney Island, Feb 15, 182[4?] to Mr. Petit de Villers, in part: "...Sincerely condole with you on the late most distressing scenes at Savannah. I am in hopes the assistance afforded by Charleston and other places will relieve the most distressed...As Planters do not usually carry Money into the Country, I have put in the enclosed Letter to her [a destitute acquaintance] a check on the Bank of South Carolina for one hundred Dollars...as Ladies do not understand negotiating things of that sort..." He continues his letter with an order for cypress logs and extends the best wishes of his family. Two small holes in the body of the letter affect four words of text, a number of repairs to splits undertaken with clear archival tape, generally good to very good.
