Description:

[ Autographs ] C.D.V. OF KIA LOUISIANA COLONEL Rare carte-de-visite of Confederate Col. Charles D. Dreau, commander of Dreau's Louisiana Battalion, showing a heavily retouched chest, up image in his Confederate uniform, with backstamp of John H. Clarke, 101 Canal St., New Orleans. Dreau was one of the earliest Confederate officers to be killed in action, being shot in a skirmish on July 4, 1861. On the verso of the image is a note in French in which a Louisianian presumably presented the image to a friend. The card has a vertical crease in the bottom half of image and some soiling, otherwise good.
