[ Autographs ] BEATING A SLAVE TO DEATH D.S. 1p. folio, [n.p.], May 10, 1808, a shocking document with descriptive text that could be straight out of "Uncle Tom's Cabin", in which an overseer is indicted and a warrant for arrest issued for the cruel beating death of a slave The document graphically describes the act committed, in part: "... Samuel Coats...an overseer on the part of said plantation engaged in whipping an old negro man slave named Frank in a most cruel manner for..an hour and a half to two hours ...said negro being stark naked... hauled from the field about half a mile ...put into an outbuilding where he languished until about the first of May when he died ... the dead body next morning after his death...appeared beaten and bruised, and quite covered with maggots from the loins downwards to his hams .. this deponent saith ... he is fully of the opinion...the said negro died in consequence of his whippings...". Some clean fold splits, otherwise very good.
