Description:

[ Autographs ] ANDREW JOHNSON Exceedingly rare, very early A.D.S "Andrew Johnson" at the head, 1p. oblong 8vo., 1p. oblong 8vo., [Greenville, Tn.], June, 1837 in which Johnson, at the time a self- employed tailor, sets forth the account of one George Park for three coats and four pairs of pants, for which it appears Park bartered the repair of a ceiling in Johnson's building. This is a most revealing document, as it shows Johnson's literacy despite the fact that he never attended a single day of school. While an apprentice tailor, Johnson was fascinated with the text of the world's great orations read to him by the shop foreman and one Dr. Hill. His eagerness to learn was such that Hill made a gift of the book to him, and the youngtailor then painstakingly taught himself to read and write. Expertly inlaid, very good.
