Description:

[ Autographs ] ANDREW JOHNSON A telling and important D.S. "Andrew Johnson" as President on Executive Mansion letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Washington, Aug. 26, 1867, in which Johnson essentially puts another nail in his own impeachment coffin! The document reads in part: "... Brevet Major General Edward R. S. Canby is hereby assigned to the command of the Second Military District...and of the Military Department of the South...He will, as soon as practicable relieve Major Genl. Daniel E. Sickles, and...[will] exercise any and all powers conferred by Act of Congress...Major General Daniel E. Sickles is hereby relieved from the command of the Second Military District...". Sickles was sacked by Johnson for what Johnson perceived as an overzealous, conservative Reconstruction policy. Canby, on the other hand, was considered pro-Southern, and even permitted Lee's paroled cavalry to re-arm to fight bushwhackers in Virginia. Of course, the purported reason for Johnson's impeachment was his dilution of Reconstruction policies and his sacking of public officials. Folds, otherwise near fine.
