Description:

[ Autographs ] Andrew G. Curtin 1817-1894 Civil War Governor of Pennsylvania who raised troops for the Union and supplied militia to enforce the armies at Gettysburg. Good content A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo., Oct.24, 1867 in which Curtin writes a laudatory letter concerning the election chances of Ulysses S. Grant. In part: "...[Grant] utterances have always been in harmony with the great party of the Country. In his services to the country he is without peer, and it is in the heart of the people to give him the highest honor..." As president, Grant would repay Curtin's loyalty, rewarding him with the position of Minister to Russia.
