Description:

[ Autographs ] (AMHERST, JEFFREY) WILLIAM AMHERST. British lieutenantgeneral and brother of Jeffrey Amherst. Fine content lot of three A.LS.'s "Wm. Amherst" 5pp. small 4to., with integral address leaves, St. James Place, [n.d., May, 1758] written to his sister-in-law, the wife of Jeffrey Amherst reporting to her on the appointment of her husband as Commander in Chief for North America during the French and Indian War. In part: "Thursday...I am still waiting here for my dispatches expecting them daily. The cause of the delay has been a Commission making out for my Brother to be General Commander in Chief of all America, with immense powers. If you could conquer your dislike to Water, you might be a Queen there, but I know you [have] little ambition. However this new change will not make his stay there longer or shorter...I wish I was gone, because the later it grows in the season, the worse the passage will be...I receive my dispatches tomorrow, & set out immediately. The King has been pleased to appoint me Deputy Adjutant General in North America, with the Rank of Lieut. Colonel there. This has made me extremely happy, for it is just what Icould desire, & I dare say will be pleasing to my Bro...you will probably hear from me from Plymouth..." A fine grouping of letters chronicling the excitement surrounding Jeffrey Amherst's appointment. Some tears, otherwise very clean and in good condition.
