[ Autographs ] Alexander Shaler b. 1827 Union brigadier general captured at the Wilderness and held hostage under the guns during the bombardment of Charleston. A.L.S. on N.Y. National Guard letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, Mar. 21, 1874, in part: "...I am too poor a preacher to discourse without a text..." Repaired at fold split, light soiling and toning.
