Description:

[ Autographs ] ALEXANDER P. STEWART (1821 - 1908) Confederate major general who commanded at Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Atlanta, and later replaced Polk after Polk's death. An unusual war-date A.N.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., Headquarters, New Madrid, Mo., Mar. 12, 1862, in which Stewart writes what appears to be a pass between the lines for the Captain of the C.S.S. Louisville. In part: "...Captain of Louisville will take Capt. Stewart across the river to Watson's & return him again. Alex P. Stewart, Brig. Genl. Comd.". On the verso of the document is the cryptic inscription, also in Stewart's hand: "U.S. Govt. vis. C.S.S. Louisville". Perhaps the steamer was involved in exchanging prisoners or sending communications between the lines. An unusual document, in very good condition.
