Description:

[ Autographs ] 1ST MASSACHUSETTS HEAVY ARTILLERY ARCHIVE A interesting grouping of 29 images of members of Co.G.1st.Ma.Hvy. Artillery, consisting of twenty identified cartes-de-visite in uniform two unidentified soldiers, one identified 6th plate tintype of a soldier with his dog (some condition problems), and six identified members of the same unit in civilian dress. About 70% of the images are in very good or better condition, with the remainder having various flaws as one would expect in a grouping of this size, predominantly trimming at the creases. Background information has beenprovided with almost all of the identified soldiers, usually includingtheir service record, age at enlistment, and former occupation. Of theidentified soldiers in uniform, eight were wounded or killed. When Grant took command of the Army of the Potomac, he decided to use the 1st Heavy Artillery as infantry. At Spotsylvania, the unit lost 55 killed and 300 wounded, and was flanked by the Confederates twice in actions at Petersburg, in which almost 200 of their number were taken prisoner. The unit is listed among "Foxes Fighting 300" as one of the best fighting units of the war, fifth among the battle deaths sustained by heavy artillery units, and sixth for most battle deaths in a single action (Spotsylvania). An unusually extensive grouping of images for a distinguished Civil War unit.
