Description:

[ Autograph ] Woodrow Wilson Il.S. as President on White House letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., Washington, Jan. 15, 1914 to William B. Hale. In part: ''..It distresses me very deeply to know that you have been temporarily knocked out You have in my opinion done a great deal and been of very great service to us and I shall be at a loss where to turn for similar service in time immediately ahead in view of the doctors orders, there is no choice but to excuse you and join in his exhortation that you now take a complete vacation..." Hale was a clergyman and a close friend of Wilson's. However, in 1917 Hale was disgraced when he was exposed as being a highly-paid agent of the German government, promoting its propaganda in the United States. Very good.
