[ Autograph ] William Clark 1770 -1838 American soldier and explorer in frontier service under Gen. Anthony Wayne against Indians, and who later joined Capt. Meriwether Lewis in leading their famous expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase and to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. Intriguing D.S. lp, folio, U.S. Arsenal, St. Louis Aug. 17, 1810 in which Clark approves an invoice for goods received at his post, including eleven pounds of beads, pocket looking glasses blankets, and so on, likely for use in trading with Indians. Interestingly, there is also a notation for "9 dozn Scalping Knives"!At the bottom, Clark writes: "Saint Louis 17th August 1810 Received the articles mentioned in the above invoice all in good order. Signedduplicate Wm. Clark US. Agt for In[dian]Aff[ai]rs'. Fine condition.
