[ Autograph ] Samuel L. Clemens Good content A.L.S. "S. L. Clemens",2pp. sm. 8vo., York harbor, A u 9 13 1902 to Col. A day after his wife is stricken with a serious illness, Clemens is still unaware of the danger to her and writes to bitterly complain about his lodgings. In part: "...14 W ]Oth is well enough, for a dama'd old rack heap... if you rent for 12 months he will pretend it was for 9, and whatever his gespraching underlings agree to put in the lease is very likely to turn up absent... It contains one of the Christliest book-heaps I know of, but those old children of God who own it, & who live in Paris in order to be handy to heaven, cling to the key & leave the tenant to be damned for lack of the means of grace...' Very good.
