[ Autograph ] Robert S Fulton An exceptional grouping of documents and ephemera relating, to Robert Fulton's ferry service in New York. The first item is a manuscript document, an 1836 filing copy of the "Covenant and agreement between Robert Fulton and William Cutting" of June 8, 1813, 3pp. sm. folio. In 1812, Fulton and Robert R. Livingston contracted with New York to provide a ferry service between what is now Fulton Street and Brooklyn for a term of 25 years and Fulton's brother-in-law, William Cutting, was given the contractto provide the steamboats. In the original of this document, Fulton assigned his 25 year lease to Cutting and agreed to provide support and maintenance instruction for the sum of E500 per year. The first steamboat, the Nassau, sailed on May 10, 1814 under their joint New York and Brooklyn Steamboat Ferry Association. In the second D.S., 4pp. folio, New York, Apr. 9, 1836, Cutting's widow agrees to sell the remainder of her interest in the same lease ending 1839 to David Leavitt and Silas Butler of Brooklyn for the sum of E28,500, as well as her interests in the boats, rents, and profits. Signed by all three parties. The third document, 4pp. folio, New York, Nov. 1, 1836 has Leavitt and Butler selling their interest in the Fulton Ferry to acommittee of about 19 men, including Seth Low, H. D. Pierrepont, W. J Cornell, and others, with Leavitt, Butler, and all committee members signing. The first document has repaired horizontal and vertical splits and marginal chips, otherwise intact, the second document is good, the third shows much wear, with chipping causing loss of a few words, many recent but careful repairs, etc. and remains clear and legible. Also included is a director's bound Historical Sketch of theFulton Ferry, and Its Associates ferries, privately printed for use by the company, Eagle Job and Book Printing, Brooklyn, 1879, about 200 pages concerning the history of the ferries. Finally, the lot includes a 1in x 1.375in "Foot Passenger' ticket for the 'Union Ferry Co.", a light ornage ticket showing a steaming ferry with company name, etc, dating from between 1854 and 1879 Five items, a fine historical lot.
