Nixon opens his letter apologizing for a delay in replying to Agnew's letter In part:'...I have no secretarial staff at my disposal for the purpose of handling political correspondence, this is the first opportunity I have had...' he continues: '. ..No one knows what the future holds, but in any event I intend to continue to speak out on the issues to the extent that the demands of my legal practice and other commitments permit with special emphasis on awakening the country to the dangers we face abroad unless we get new foreign policy leadership in Washington I would welcome receiving any comments or observations you may have on political sentiments or developments in your area...' Four months after John F. Kennedy's death, Lyndon Johnson seemed poised to escalate American involvement in Vietnam. Nixon was right in his statement "No one knows what the future holds.."; four years later he would select Agnew as his running mate, and both would resign in disgrace over kickback scandals and the Watergate affair. Fine condition. Included is a telegram sent by Nixon to Agnew congratulating him on the election of Republican governors in 1966, with a copy of Agnew's letter to Nixon thanking him for the telegram and expressing his optimism.
