Inscribed on the front flyleaf.. "To Friend J. Carpenter with respects of the author. P T Bamum Murray Hill Hotel, N. Y March 11th, 1886' In typical Barnum fashion, the printed inscription reads: "Dedicated To The Whole Civilized World In General and To The Universal Yankee Nation In Particular".
