Allen writes to a friend in Russia, in part: '...Probably you have heard something of our work on this island. I have had command of it with two battalions until now. Tomorrow I start for Leyte... where I take command of the trying column, live companies of infantry, Johnston k Scouts and Casser's native scouts which I organized here ...I have lost out of my command on this island 32 killed and 29 wounded and missing, but we have killed upwards of 700 insurgents ...it will be along time before we finish with the robber bands and before less than60,000 soldiers are properly required to pin down the group. Then comes China, but Hurrah for... Roosevelt...' Also with the letter is an official copy of a communique recommending Major Allen for promotion for his pursuit of General Lukban and the capture of his treasury. Letters from the Phillipine Insurrection, especially with content, are extremely uncommon. With transmittal envelope.
